Now I have to work harder to keeps your curiosity to the end of my story about my very first days of being a member of the team at Cambridge Consultants…
Time goes fast… It must be good times… Nearly a month has passed since the elevator stopped at the 6th floor of 745 Atlantic Avenue …Considering my previous work experiences, the first week at Cambridge Consultants was different, like jumping into a frozen river somewhere in northern Russia after a hot steam bath…
My career path has always taken me to different companies in different countries, some cases in different continents… All of the companies where I contributed in the past were along similar lines; developing products for their own product portfolios, with their manufacturing facilities close by. I must admit I have been lucky and always found myself contributing to very interesting and challenging projects… As lucky as a wood duck chick falls from the nest on the trees down onto softest cushion of the leafs or as lucky as a monarch butterfly who found a quiet corner in a traveller’s car all the way down to Mexico, to their sacred meeting place… Gaining wide technical perspective over product development, adaptability to different industries, handling the different problems and working with and getting to know many very nice people were some natural benefits I got throughout this journey… Also enjoyed being proud of getting some patents, like being first person walking on the early morning fresh snow …
Working as a special purpose machinery engineer was always enjoyable. I also learned from nature about problem solving and creativity and effort for reaching excellence
As an example…I was amazed when I found out about the innovative power of the 40 ton Humpback Whale… To feed their normal technique is to create a bubble net to terrorise the school of fish and create a dense fish ball that makes for a tasty lunch and makes the most of the fishes’ false sense of security. This is highly energy demanding and not an ideal way of hunting for whales. Their main objective is using energy wisely and making lots of blubber before they go back to southern breeding grounds. One day in 1984 marine biologists started to notice that one individual, who obviously was fed up with that kind of inefficient hunting and wanted to keep more blubber in house, invented the kick feeding method on Stellwagen Bank Marine Park, situated off shore Boston. This was an ingeniously clever way to create same effect of net feeding and more than half of energy is spared. In a short time all whales observed in this area had started to imitate this innovation. The pacific whales have not read the memo yet!
Forgive me for this distraction… I was telling you about my first day at Cambridge Consultants…like a pacific humpback… The first morning in the office I was thinking about the change and instinctively comparing past and present… After a while I felt that “butterflies in the stomach” feeling, like a trapeze artist who is flying between swinging bars. Although I had a very good idea about Cambridge Consultants before I started, I must confess feeling confused between past and present.
First week past, I started to realize that my lucky career path had brought me to a much more enjoyable, innovative, and exciting and challenging place, with the opportunity for much rewarding success. Understanding the details of some existing and past projects and seeing how I could really make a difference let the butterfly wings fade away…
Most importantly it was very impressive to meet and talk to people around the office everyone knows and executes their subject very well, at the same time they are wonderful, young hearted, energetic and brilliant individuals. I can’t think of better natural soil than what Cambridge Consultants provides for ingenious solutions and powerful creativity across a vast variety of subjects and across many different market areas from consumer product development to precision agriculture
I believe this makes Cambridge Consultants a unique, exciting and great place to work .
Now I feel the unbearable lightness of a breaching whale, and I feel at home like a monarch butterfly in the sacred tree somewhere in Mexico after an enduring journey…
